before the reign of google's "don't look at ugly blog at randomivysaur.bearblog.dev, look at this random fishy website instead!" thing, there were webrings. these are a collection of sites, put on one site so one can go through all of them there.

owners of sites can add buttons to their site to link to other members in the webring, and each website owner in the ring does this too so everyone is linked together. for example my webrings section in my main page. when you open that up, you'll see a couple webrings. on the retronaut webring, pressing 'back' there (as of writing this) brings you to a neocities website (my favorite one actually), then 'forth' links to a sports fansite. then when you land on those, you can find a set of the same (or similar only) buttons, which link back to my website and another website.

wonderful way of discovering sites, where you don't really know what kind of site you'll land on.

sadly people are indeed still listening to google and do as they say.
